Cricket this weekend

21st July 2011

With no fixtures last weekend I thought this week I’d give you a look ahead at this weekend’s fixtures.

Firstly though, it’s worth mentioning that Sunday was the first England development training day, 12 to 14 players took part in this including a number of junior players and a number of female players. The day was a big success so well done to John Garbett for organising it and thanks to Mark and Amy Allen for coaching. The next such day is planned for late August and more details will follow soon.

This Weekend
Sunday is the third Twenty20 Cup Quarter final with Hampshire hosting Yorkshire as they both attempt to join Metro and Northants at Finals Day.

BCEW League
Metro v Northants
Metro will be aiming to take advantage of South Wales and Sussex’s weekend off by winning their game in hand. A Metro win would leave them just 15 points behind Sharks and 13 behind Dragons with all three sides having 3 games still to play. If Northants could avoid defeat they will still have a chance of moving up a place or two in the table from their current seventh.

Hampshire v Yorkshire
On Saturday Hampshire also play their game in hand, they only trail Metro by 4 points and a win could make it a four horse title race. For Yorkshire a good result would leave them in with a good chance of a top half finish but they are too far behind to mount a title challenge.

Warwickshire v Metro Devils
Warwickshire will see this as a must win game. A win for Bears would leave them comfortably in mid table and would keep their hopes of finishing in the top half alive, anything other than a win though and they’d be fairly certain to finish sixth. As for Devils, this is their final league game and in their first season completing all seven fixtures is an achievement in itself. If Devils could pull off a shock win they might just avoid the wooden spoon too as Northants are not completely out of their reach yet.

Finally one correction from last week’s report, in the Yorkshire v Metro Devils report I wrongly stated that Ryan Jones was third out, in fact he was seventh and last out and batted well holding the innings together. I apologize for this error.
