Brilliant Hossell helps Somerset shock Northants

14th May 2013

An accomplished all round performance from Ed Hossell led Somerset VICC to a surprise victory over Northants Steelbacks in the first round of the BBS Primary Club Heindrich Swanepoel Memorial Cup.

Somerset, playing in their first ever competitive match, did come in to the game with some pedigree as they won the 2012 Southern Development League & have made a strong start in the same competition in 2013. Northants were playing in their first game of the season following their 5th place finish in last season’s National League.

In windy, cold & very noisy conditions Northants sent their less experienced opposition in to bat. With the sound of a nearby motorway making communication in the field difficult & minimizing the contribution B1 players could make Somerset’s openers, Ed Hossell & Rob Crisp dominated the attack.

Both batsmen scored heavily with Hossell taking the majority of the strike. A few half chances came & went whilst the scoring rate topped 10 an over, but only one good catching chance was put down. As the innings progressed it was clear the home team were taking a dominant position & when a wicket did finally fall it looked set to be too little too late. After a terrific innings Rob Crisp was caught behind from the bowling of Dave Keeling, but not before he bought up his first career century, his innings ending on 105 with the opening partnership ending at 263.

Hossell continued to score rapidly and dominate the strike whilst wickets fell at the other end, number 3 Jason Aughton struggled to hear the ball & was soon bowled by Chris Norman. The next ball experienced former England wicketkeeper Dave Wood faced his first ball for Somerset & after two bounces Norman’s delivery crashed in to his stumps.

Three overs later Dave Gavrilovic trapped Steven Aughton LBW for 6 before Hossell took apart the last over to finish on 184 not out. Somerset left the field after amassing 338/4 with only Dave Gavrilovic (1-38) & David Keeling (1-44) exerting any control from their 6 overs.

In response Somerset’s opening batsmen turned opening bowlers with Hossell & Crisp sharing an economical first 6 overs with Northants score only reaching 24/0. In truth Northants never really got going, a number of batsmen tried to accelerate the scoring rate but Hossell (3), Wood (2) and Crisp (1) held every catching chance that came near them. Michael Church bowled a good line & length for 4-19 with Hossell taking 2-24. Alan Humphries top scored for the away team with 27 & B1 Chris Norman impressed with a battling 14 in very difficult conditions before being run out.

After 24 overs with the score 139/8 Northants declared so that players could leave in time to catch their last trains home.

So Somerset comfortably progress to the quarter finals where they will play away to Nottinghamshire. It’s also worth noting that this season in all competitions Ed Hossell now has 438 runs without being dismissed once.
