Experience Shines Through In Cup First Round

17th May 2013

Experience paid off in the first round of this year’s BBS Primary Club Heindrich Swanepoel Memorial Cup as with the exception of Somerset surprising Northants Steelbacks.

All other matches went the way of the National League teams.

Lancashire had the easiest passage through to the quarter finals after Durham withdrew on the morning of their first round clash due to a lack of available players.

Berkshire Stags v Sussex Sharks was the most one sided game of the round, Sharks openers Si Ledwith (134) & Jimmy Millard (117) notched their 3rd & 1st career centuries respectively before both retired hurt. Their replacements Kelvin Duncan (64 not out) & Marcus Kippling (50 not out) both scored their first career fifty as the two time defending National League Champions smashed 432/0 in 23 overs.

The Stags fought hard in reply but only a 28 run partnership from Ian Whitehurst & Kiran Kaja & a 27 run partnership from Whitehurst & Mo Azmi dragged the score up to respectability as Berkshire were bowled out for 81.

After defeat in the first round in 2012 Hampshire VICC were out to regain some pride in the competition as they travelled to face Nottingham Knights.

Batting first the national league side were wobbling at 19/2 before Jonathan Lewis & Ryan West came together & took complete control of the match. They shared a partnership of 278 including 35 fours & 1 six. West fell in the closing overs for 135 with Lewis ending up 114 not out in a total of 315/3.

The extra significance of Lewis’s century is that it was the first ever by a low partial batsman.

In response the Knights tried their best and did manage to bat for 27 overs, but no batsman reached 20 as they were dismissed for 93. Ryan West (3-17), Ian Morris (3-23) & Dave Daniels (2-7) were the pick of the bowlers.

This leaves the quarter final draw looking like this:

Game A: Lancashire Lions v Yorkshire VICC
Game B: Warwickshire Bears v Metro
Game C: Hampshire VICC v Sussex Sharks
Game D: Nottinghamshire VICC v Somerset VICC

Semi Finals
Winner of Game A v Winner of Game B
Winner of Game C v Winner of Game D
