Staffordshire and Worcestershire meet in first match

31st March 2015

By Andy Causton

Although the weather was bad, we didn’t let it dampen our spirits!

On 29th March, Staffordshire’s new VI cricket team welcomed Worcestershire Ambassadors to Tettenhall College Sports’ Hall for a 12 overs a-side match.

Before we got under way, we shook hands with Baroness Heyhoe-Flint; a local dignatory who I admire greatly. She captained England’s first Women’s team and has done much to support sport here in Wolverhampton - click here for more info.

As both teams had fewer than 11 players, we decided to make two teams with a combination of Staffs and Worcs players.

My team batted first. I batted at three but the nerves were jangling for the first few balls. Eventually, I relaxed though and hit the ball three times. I got several runs, thanks to excellent running between the wickets.

After I retired, our new star all-rounder, Janaid, played several shots that could have taken the lights out! These mighty blows produced boundaries and sixes; helping us score a challenging 79.

However, the team batting second had a secret weapon; Suzannah. Armed with her own bat, she blasted boundaries and sixes from the outset. Later in the innings, Staffs eldest player, Germal, scored two boundaries. All this hitting, plus excellent running between the wickets by our own Shazad, meant the team in second reached their target without too much difficulty.

On the whole, everyone from both clubs played well. We all shook hands at the end and headed for a well-deserved tea at Wolverhampton Cricket Club.

Well done everyone - here’s to the return match on 14th June!
