Staffordshire’s Sweet Revenge – The Memorial Ground – Worcester

24th June 2015

Report by Andrew Caustin

On 14 June 2015, Staffordshire made the return trip to play Worcestershire Ambassadors at Old Elizabethan’s CC in Worcester.

The weather was good so we were able to play outside. Staffordshire batted first but lost two early wickets. However, big scores from Riaber Hussain, Shezad Chohan and Mohammed Janaid meant we posted a more than respectable 176 off our allotted 16 overs.

However, after a drinks break, Worcestershire got off to a flying start. Their star bats-woman, Suzannah Barnett, hit the ball cleanly and regularly; scoring boundaries and singles whenever possible. Once she had retired on 50, Worcester required just 53 off 7 overs. However, Staffordshire tightened up their bowling and took several wickets. The big hitting abated and by the end of their innings, Worcestershire were 16 short.

Although I attended New College Worcester for three years, I felt proud to be part of a winning Staffordshire team. The victory was down to excellent batting, late wickets and supportive coaching over the past six months from Steve Lightfoot, John Armstrong and Andy Gough. Staffordshire played as a team but would not have achieved a win without the support from the coaches.

A big thanks too to Will from the Ambassadors for agreeing to join our team for the afternoon; well played, Will!

A big thank you also to everyone who offered lifts to players; we could not have got there without you.

Finally, a big thank you to the Old Elizabethan’s catering team. Everyone enjoyed the food; just what we needed after a great afternoon’s cricket.
